Concord Based Shoe Show Plans $22 Million Solar Farm

Shoe Show Inc. is spending about $22.5 million to build a 4.975-megawatt solar farm at its headquarters in Concord.

The farm will be the second-largest in North Carolina, behind only the 17.2-megawatt project SunEdison built in Davidson County to provide power to Duke Energy.

Duke also will purchase the power from the Concord farm.

Shoe Show is building the project in three phases. The first, costing almost $7.5 million, will total 1.625 megawatts. Construction is well under way and could be completed in as little as two weeks.

The two additional phases are rated at 1.7 and 1.6 megawatts. They are expected to cost less than $15 million and may be completed as early as December.

Shoe Show has been working on the project for several months. It made its first filing with the N.C. Utilities Commission, giving notice of construction of the first phase, in February.

The company submitted an application for registration of the facility as a renewable-energy project on Aug. 15.

Shoe Show Inc. is a shoe retailer. Its store operations include Shoe Show, Shoe Dept. and Burlington Shoes, with 1,114 locations in 36 states.
